What Okapi stores
When you save a highlight or write a note, Okapi stores the following in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB) on your device:
- the text you saved and any tags or notes you add;
- the title, address (URL), website and icon of the page it came from;
- the date and time you saved it;
- summaries you ask Okapi to generate;
- your settings, such as your chosen theme and layout.
This data never leaves your device. We have no server to send it to, and we can't see it.
What Okapi does not do
- It does not collect personal information.
- It does not use analytics, tracking, advertising or cookies.
- It does not sell, share or transfer your data to anyone.
- It does not sync to the cloud. To move your notes to another computer, use Export and Import.
Why Okapi asks for access to web pages
Okapi runs a small script on the pages you visit so it can show the Save snippet button when you select text, and so it can highlight text you saved earlier. The script works on the page in your browser only. It does not send page content anywhere. It also uses the activeTab permission to read the current page's title and address when you choose to attach it to a note, and the storage permission to remember your settings.
AI summaries
The summary feature uses Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano), which runs on your device. It only runs when you press a Summarize button. To summarize a page, Okapi briefly opens it in a background tab, reads its text, and closes the tab. The text is not stored or sent to any server by Okapi. The first time you use the feature, Chrome may download its on-device AI model, and Okapi asks before this happens. That download is handled by Chrome, not by Okapi.
Exporting your data
If you export your notes to PDF, Word, text or JSON, the file is created on your device and saved where you choose. What you do with it afterwards is up to you.
Deleting your data
You can delete a single highlight, a page, or everything at any time from the Okapi library (Settings › Data › Clear all). Removing the extension from Chrome also removes its stored data.
Children
Okapi doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children.
